Spa in Ibiza or Formentera: which one is worth your day?

If you're spending days in Ibiza with one boat trip to Formentera, this is the honest guide for deciding where to book the massage.

Ibiza has more variety. Formentera has the better experience.

That's the core difference. Ibiza has Atzaró Spa, Aguas de Ibiza, the big names around Marina Botafoch — serious operations with full thermal circuits, treatment rooms with views, and the polish of 5★ hotels. It also means: shared waiting rooms with a hundred other guests, rituals timed to the minute, and two-week lead times in August.

Formentera doesn't compete on volume. There's no Atzaró here. What you find are small studios, usually inside boutique hotels, where the same person who greets you also says goodbye. Udumbara, for example, has one massage room and one beauty room. One guest at a time. No clock on the table.

When Ibiza wins

Four scenarios:

You want a real thermal circuit: sauna, steam, hammam, heated pool, jets. Only the big spas have it — Atzaró, Aguas, the larger Insotels.

You're in a group of 4+ wanting parallel treatments. Formentera doesn't scale, Ibiza does.

You want a "destination spa" day: lunch + treatment + pool. Atzaró does this format very well.

You're not leaving Ibiza that week.

When Formentera wins

Three clear cases:

You've had a day of beach, paddle, cycling or hiking on Formentera and want the massage same-day. Booking at 11am for a 6pm slot is normal here. In Ibiza it's not.

You're already in the "I'm crossing to the other island to disconnect" mindset. The whole of Formentera is built around that — a small studio fits the plan, doesn't break it.

You want a specific technique — traditional Thai on a futon, clinical acupuncture, Phytomer marine cosmetics — and you don't want the standardised "house" massage of a hotel spa. Formentera's boutique offer has more technical depth per person, less breadth.

Prices: the gap is smaller than you think

There's a myth that Formentera is "more expensive". Not true — what's expensive is the 5★ category in Ibiza, not the island. Reference points:

Relaxing massage 60 min: Atzaró ~€140, Aguas ~€160. Udumbara Formentera: €100.

Premium facial 75 min: Ibiza ~€180–220. Udumbara: €110–125 with Phytomer.

Acupuncture clinical session: Ibiza ~€120. Udumbara: €100.

The gap: in Ibiza you're also paying for the property — the grounds, pool, bar. Worth it if you use them. If you only want the treatment, you're paying for things you don't use.

The plan we recommend

If you have 5–7 days in Ibiza with one or two day-trips to Formentera:

One destination spa day in Ibiza: Atzaró or similar. Book ahead, give it the full day, use the circuit and lunch.

One day in Formentera: morning ferry, beach, lunch, mid-afternoon massage, return on the last ferry. Book the massage the day before — Es Caló is 25 minutes from La Savina port, very doable.

The result: two distinct experiences. The big one (volume + luxury + circuit) and the small one (intimacy + technique + island pace). Neither replaces the other. Combined, still less than two consecutive days at Atzaró.
